Stray :
Verb : move away aimlessly from a group or from the right course or place.
Adjective : not in the right place; separated from the group or target.
Noun : a stray person or thing, especially a domestic animal.
Does any of the above annotation mirror anything positive in any way? To associate a mortal with the term ‘stray’ is like associating him with melancholy – which is doubtlessly not something to feel great about. Despite all this, does one term change the familiar fact that every soul grows under the same sky and breaths the same air, thus deserving to be treated as one among all?
My next question is, aren’t animals specifically dogs included among mortals? Of course they are! Then why are they treated dissimilarly? One thing is certain, that the sphere is a stir of explicit emotions ; where on one hand you find people who scorn at the view of a stray, on the other you will also find people who will give it their best to serve those very same strays.
In special regard to India (because I live here and know the prevalent situation), I can firmly state that more than half of the society disdains and cringes at the sight of noticing stray dogs wandering on roads. As an observant, I also see those same set of people exhibiting a different side of them when they spot a dog owned by their friend. Why? Because those dogs aren’t stray? Because they happen to come from a certain ‘breed’? And how does that make a difference? A dog is a dog, all of them irrespective of their breed – crave to relish love and care. Feeling pity for the crowd that display such differentiation towards these innocent beings, makes me wonder at times on how would have they felt if a dog reverted in the same demeanor as them – overlooking the one’s apart from their owners and randomly barking at others, making them ponder over things they did that got them such grumbling and growling in return!
To be afraid of dogs is natural. But, to be afraid based only on their breed and the fact that they are stray is so inconvenient. Like any other animal, they don’t react unless you force an action upon them. And anyway, there’s no guarantee that the dogs being pampered at home who are well-trained and vaccinated will never bite you or will behave the way you want them to when left on a lone street to take a stroll.
Being a true dog-lover, I absolutely adore dogs heedless of the pedigree they pertain to ; but I won’t deny that I have a little extra soft spot towards the stray’s. I feed and have four of them at my home, my cousin in the same town has a golden retriever and my best friend has a black labrador – honestly, I fail to observe anything different in any one of them, rather I can trace an ample of similarities. When set free without a leash in a lush green garden, all of them would play happily and joyfully with one another – a distinctive point that we as humans need to learn from these angelic souls – if they share no differences then who are we?
I ardently support animal welfare centers like Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre founded by Mrs Maneka Gandhi, The Welfare of Stray Dogs , International Rescue Dog Organization, PeTA India, Jaagruti – Animal Helplines in Delhi and NCR , PAWS – Save Animals Save Environment, Animal Welfare Association, Humane Society International – Street Dog Welfare, Karuna Animal Welfare Association – the list is endless and I’m so glad that there are remarkably varied people and associations who wish the best for animals and tirelessly support the cause all around the globe – immense respect and kudos to you!
For all the viewers, the only appeal I want to make to you is to shower your love and affection towards these sinless souls. They aren’t zombies who’ll eat you up! The best you can do is to avoid shooing them away – the least you can deliver to them are your leftovers. Let love shine in a language that you’ll cherish!

I Love Stray Dogs, because No One Else Loves them.
One of my Society Friends helps an NGO dedicated to picking up the pups of these so-called stray dogs in India, looking after them, making them clean and adorable and then finding them a family to Adopt them.
In our Society we have many stray dogs. Once a week, I go to the chicken shop and buy the chicken bones which is mere Rs. 40/-. per kg. I buy about 2 kgs and divide them into 5 packets. So every morning, I remove one packet, boil the meat bones in salt. Then I put them in the Doggie Bucket and go down in the early morning. Whichever dog I see around, he gets his days food.
Now these dogs who I feed, are so used to me, that whenever they see me, they come up and start licking my legs and waiting for their chicken bones.
Watching them eat the warm chicken bones and meat, makes me feel so Good, I can’t explain it.

This morning, I went down as usual with the Bowl of Doggie bones and meat to feed my pet doggie. He was’nt around and I had to get ready for office, so I told the Security Guard to feed him, when he decides to show up. The Guard did that.
Later when I went down to start my car for Office, Zippo (My Doggie), came running to me, I was wowndering if she’s still hungry ? But he just pressed his head, gently against my knee and stood there still, till I petted him. I Guess he was saying “Thank You Cattie”.

I do not hate dogs be it stray or specially grown up but I just fear injections if they bite me😐

That fear is natural. 😀
But any dog as I mentioned, usually doesn’t react unless an action is forced on him.

I understand but even though I would love to play with them, this fear stops me. 😀

BTW I am nominating you for a quote challenge if that’s ok for you.

Try feeding them – that’s the best way to get acquainted with a canine!

I wholeheartedly agree! It is very sad that so many have been euthanized. I wonder what can be done for the poor souls – along with your suggestions? Perhaps controlled breeding and some sort of law where you have to register a dog and are penalised if you can’t account for it? I hope the situation changes. On a different note, I feel that many Syrian refugees and those from war torn countries are treated like strays 😦

Nice suggestion, but I doubt anyone owing up to this. You see, there are so many who won’t even bother to go through the pain of registering their dog in the first place. I guess some serious actions in this regard need to be implicated by some senior authorities. In case of the Syrian refugees, I also feel the same, they and many more others are treated as strays where people literally pay no heed to them – every other person just shuts the door for them – its sad and depressing to see them in this position!

I completely agree with you.
Having fear of dogs is fine, but treating them on the basis of if they are owned by someone or not is entirely foul.
Either love them or don’t.
Though if you will love them, you can expect one of the most selfless love in return. ❤

I am absolutely on your side and all the words do echo with my thinking about strays. I also spend many hours of my waking day vociferously shouting at inhuman people who pelt stones and try to harm these innocent creatures who have adapted to the environment so well. Yes, there is no difference at all in a home bred and the ownerless ones, except that the latter is more disciplined and never harm any mortals. This I can vouch for after having had the good fortune of owning a spitz and also caring for those around me ..

I’m happy that despite owing a spitz, you show equal love to other dogs as well. If only others could relate as well! 🙂

Wow, this a wonderful post! As a compassionate dog lover myself, I am so in synch with everything you have said here. At our old house, there was a friendly female dog who quickly became friends with me and my brother and we’d always feed her biscuits or anything non vegetarian that is left over in the dining table 😀 We even named it Hedwig (HP addict) and after she laid a litter of puppies, those cuties became affectionate towards us too. Now we have moved a few streets away but every time me and my brother visit Hedwig and the pups (now they’re all grown up) that got acquainted with us, they’d come running as soon as we turn the corner, having picked up the familiar scent. They’re so adorable!

It feels so good when people relate to what you're trying to convey..and I feel equally glad that your Hedwig and her pups show so much affection to you and your brother. Much love to you. Keep the good deeds coming! 🙂
